Is Karate for your Child?

By Eric Siley, Chief Instructor, KC Premier Martial Arts

The most frequently asked question we receive from callers is this: “how much do your lessons cost?”  I think some callers are looking for a good activity for their child, and some have an understanding that learning Karate can improve a child’s confidence and discipline, which is a great starting point!  The real question is this: “what kind of values will Karate, and more importantly, the way you are teaching Karate build in my child?”

At KC Premier Martial Arts, our Karate program teaches the following values, along with the physical movements:

  • Focus – To pay attention
  • Discipline – To always do your best!
  • Self-Control – Using our minds to control our bodies and behavior
  • Respect – Treating other people the way you want to be treated
  • Learning  - Learning to be a good learner
  • Attitude – Knowing how to act in a positive manner, and doing it!
  • Confidence – To believe in yourself, because you’ve done extraordinary things!
  • Choices – Making the right decisions, and understanding consequences of bad decisions
  • Goals – Knowing how to set them, achieve them, and showing perseverance when it isn’t easy
  • Fitness – To exercise, have fun, and be stronger and safer!
  • Teamwork – Knowing how to work together to bring out the best in yourself and others
  • Manners – To act and speak with respect to your peers, elders, parents, and teachers

As a child progresses through our system, parents, family members, and friends see positive changes.  In addition to these values, children are getting stronger, more coordinated, more fit, and learning to be safer.  Every child can make significant progress in Karate, without ever having to sit on the bench.  We’re not promising miracles, but try to think of one other activity you can find for your child that teaches these values, has the physical benefits, and that your child wants to do, each and every week?

How much does it cost?  It costs about the same as an adult going to Starbuck’s on weekdays.  Give us a call, and we’d welcome the chance to talk with you about how Karate at KC Premier Martial Arts could benefit your child.

The “Why” and “How Long” of Adult Self-defense

The “Why” and “How Long” of Self-Defense

Why Take a Self-Defense Course?  Why learn how to drive safely, change a flat tire, or balance your checkbook?  Basic self-defense skills are a basic life skill.  Although we live in a society that is relatively safe and affluent for many, let me share some facts with you.  In this country, we currently have the following:

  • One murder every 21 minutes
  • One robbery every 55 seconds
  • One aggravated assault every 33 seconds
  • Overall, we have one violent crime every 17 seconds
  • Almost everyone will be the victim of theft at least once

These are the serious crimes.  These statistics to not take into account stalking, bullying, intimidation, and regular assault.  Does this mean that you should worry and live in fear?  Absolutely not!  This means we should all be aware, and take some positive steps to learn how to deal with an emergency in which we may have to defend ourselves.

How long does it take to learn self-defense?  Any training is better than no training.  A weekend seminar is a good start, but building basic self-defense skills under a modern training system (assuming a good general level of fitness) will take between 20-40 hours of training and drill.

Training just two evenings per week, for six months, would get you 48 hours of training, with an important side benefit – your overall level of fitness will increase a great deal.  Contrary to what some people will tell you, you don’t need to be on the path to a Black Belt to learn the basics and be ready to defend yourself.

Krav Maga is a modern system of self-defense that is intended to bring adults to a high level of proficiency quickly by using fewer techniques more often, and starting with the body’s natural reactions under stress.  With 40+ hours of Krav Maga training, you will have covered all of the basics, and will be surprised at what you’re able to do.  You won’t have to take our word for it, you’ll see it for yourself – under safe but realistic training drills.  Schedule an Introduction to Krav Maga today. Self-defense is self-empowerment!
